Click on that box, and in the window that opens, select “GUID Partition Table”.

At the bottom of the window is a box labelled “Options…”.

Under where it says Partition Layout, select “1 Partition”.

Click on the icon for the new drive, and select the Partition tab.

I bought an Inatek model from Amazon which, apart from being easy to use (no tools required), is optimised for SSD. To do this you’ll need an external caddy to put the new drive in – this won’t be wasted, though, as you can then put your old drive in this once everything is done – in my case I now have a USB 3 external drive containing a 120GB SSD (making it ideal for throwing in your bag).

The easiest way to copy over your old drive is to clone it.

Not very hi-tec but it got me a basic list. I re-sized the icons so that everything fitted on the screen and then took a screenshot. This shows a simpler version of your installations. Personally, I opened up a Finder window, clicked on Applications. However, this is a rather large list, including all the versions you have installed, etc.

If you’re going for a clean installation then you’ll need to install your apps again afterwards. One of the other advantages of buying a Samsung SSD, then, is that it’s Apple approved (as they provide the existing SSD drives).

This ensures that insecure drivers cannot be installed – any attempt to do so will prevent the Macbook from booting. The problem with Yosemite, though, is a new feature called “kext signing”. However, it can be enabled via third party software, such as Trim Enabler. OS X only supports Trim for their Apple’s own approved drives. The 850 is a new model, much quicker than previous models and with a much improved life-span.
